Ritual Etiquette and Preparation

Our Tradition owes much to the Egyptian and Sumerian Priesthoods, as well as to the Pythagorean philosophers. It is fitting, then, that our concepts of ritual piety and purity derive therefrom.

Prior to important ceremonies, such as initiations, dark/full moon assemblies, and the High Holy Days, we observe a three day fast. The first two days are not fasts per se, but allow one to enjoy a moderate diet. Meat, dairy, and fish are prohibited. Liquids are encouraged. On the last day, one should only drink juice, teas, and water. However, allowing for dietary needs, a limited number of fresh fruits and vegetables may be taken to preserve energy and strength. During this three day period, one should take stock of your life and aim at purification and focus of intent upon the work at hand.

Prior to the actual ritual, one should abstain from sexual intercourse for 24 hours. (In ancient times, it was permissible to worship in the house of Inanna and lie with her priesthood. However, with the destruction of those temples and the branding of Inanna’s priesthood as “whores”, this is no longer continued).

Before entering sacred space, one should be bathed and anointed in a scented oil pleasing to you or sacred to your deities. (NOTA BENE: Save for very specific rituals focusing on Pan or the Underworld Gods, patchouli scent is generally NOT used in our Tradition). Remember – body odor is lethal for close knit ritual!

Within the ritual, all should maintain a reverent and respectful attitude. Do not touch a ritual tool unless it is yours or you have been handed by the officiating Priest/ess for a specific action within the ritual.

All are equal before the Gods. However, remember that – for the sake of that a particular ritual event – the officiating Priest/ess represents the Gods to those assembled. (They also represent the assembled group to the Gods, but that is a secondary consideration).

Unless there is a period where all may share insight or petition, or one has been asked to speak, strive to abide in quiet while lending your will and authority to the focus of the event.

Beepers, cell phones, and other electrical doodads are NOT welcome in circle.

If you are at odds with anyone at any gathering, or are not feeling well, you should gracefully explain your self and stay outside of the ritual space. You may help in other ways (setting up for potluck, et al), offer personal prayers, and/or meditate during this time.

If you are ever guesting in another’s ritual, discern with respect the general focus and methods of the event. Strive to uphold greatest honor per the codes of hospitality. The only exception is if blasphemy is committed. It is your duty to step in – regardless of the host – and call the proceedings to a halt.
